THE SOLID WASTE CRISIS IN BRAZIL: SUSTAINABILITY, RECYCLING, AND SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Solid waste management in Brazil represents a complex challenge involving environmental, social, economic, and institutional dimensions, especially due to the increasing generation of urban waste and limitations in the implementation of public policies. This study aimed to analyze the scientific literature on the solid waste crisis in Brazil, with an emphasis on sustainability, recycling, and socio-environmental responsibility. This is an integrative literature review conducted in the SciELO, Latindex, SpringerLink, and OJS repositories, including articles published between 2015 and 2025 in Portuguese and English. The search strategy used descriptors related to solid waste management, sustainability, recycling, and circular economy. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 15 studies were selected for analysis. The results show that, despite regulatory advances provided by the National Solid Waste Policy, significant weaknesses persist in municipal management, particularly in selective collection, infrastructure, and adequate final disposal of waste. Regional inequalities, low recycling rates, and challenges in implementing shared responsibility are also evident. On the other hand, the studies highlight the importance of environmental education, circular economy, and the role of waste pickers as essential strategies for system sustainability. It is concluded that solid waste management in Brazil still faces structural and operational limitations, requiring integrated actions between government, productive sector, and society to promote greater efficiency and environmental sustainability.
