BIBLIOGRAPHIC COLLECTION DONATIONS IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES: THE INCORPORATION OF THE SPECIAL COLLECTION OF MAURÍCIO DE ALMEIDA ABREU BY THE PPGG/UFRJ LIBRARY

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the incorporation of private bibliographic collections into university libraries, considering their relevance for the preservation of scientific memory and the formation of special collections. The research is characterized as qualitative, bibliographic, documentary, and exploratory in nature, using as a case study the incorporation of the special collection of geographer Maurício de Almeida Abreu by the Library of the Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (PPGG/UFRJ). The analysis demonstrates that the donation of private collections goes beyond the material dimension of book transfer, constituting a process of preserving intellectual trajectories, research interests, and records of the scientific production of their former owners. The results show that the role of university libraries is essential in transforming private collections into institutional bibliographic heritage through technical procedures of evaluation, registration, organization, preservation, and access provision. It is concluded that the incorporation of special collections contributes to the strengthening of academic research, the preservation of institutional memory, and the expansion of access to knowledge, reaffirming the role of university libraries as institutions responsible for safeguarding and disseminating intellectual heritage.
