LIFE THROUGH THE EYES: TONI MORRISON AND CONCEIÇÃO EVARISTO IN DIALOGUE

Toni Morrison, with her novel Beloved, and Conceição Evaristo, with her short story Olhos d’Água, are placed side by side to identify thematic and symbolic points of contact between the two works. Using a qualitative methodology and a literature review, themes such as eyes, memory, poverty, hunger, slavery, bodies, religiosity, and uprooting are analyzed. Both authors present narratives denouncing dehumanization and marginalization. Religious and bodily symbols function as mediators of memory and people’s struggles. The characters’ subjectivity can be observed through issues such as life experiences, slavery, social exclusion, and forced migration. Both Evaristo and Morrison articulate a poetics of memory through a literature of denunciation that seeks to become visible in the space of life.
