Abstract

The Southern region, the second largest corn producer in Brazil, is responsible for 18.8% of national production. The objective of this work is to analyze the current scenario of corn silage production in Southern Brazil, highlighting productive, technological, and quality aspects. In the 2022/2023 harvest, the state of Rio Grande do Sul produced 3,960,494 tons of grain corn, generating approximately more than 5 million reais. The greater dispersion in corn production in Rio Grande do Sul reflects a complex set of climatic, economic, technical, and technological factors. This occurs due to the diversity of production systems in the state. Corn silage plays a fundamental role in ruminant nutrition; its nutritional value is influenced by the morphological composition of the plant, maturation stages, grain filling, and the relationship between the fibrous fraction and energy density. This makes silage a distinct feed, considering the combination of the forage fraction and the grains. Therefore, corn silage production in the southern region of the country has been intensifying over the years. Even with a smaller cultivated area, Rio Grande do Sul has increased its production and productivity per hectare cultivated.
