Artificial intelligence (AI) has been increasingly incorporated into Dentistry, particularly in implant dentistry, due to its potential to optimize surgical planning and improve treatment predictability. This study aimed to conduct a narrative review of the literature on the application of artificial intelligence in dental implant planning, focusing on its accuracy, efficiency, and clinical applicability. The review was conducted according to the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles (SANRA) guidelines. Electronic searches were performed in the PubMed/Medline database using the descriptors “artificial intelligence,” “dental implant planning,” and related terms, without language or publication date restrictions. Studies addressing the use of AI in implant planning were included. The analyzed studies demonstrated that AI-based systems provide results comparable to those achieved by human specialists in implant selection, positioning, and evaluation, while significantly reducing planning time. Satisfactory outcomes were also observed in the segmentation of anatomical structures, registration between cone-beam computed tomography and intraoral scans, automated image analysis, and prediction of surgical requirements prior to implant placement. It can be concluded that artificial intelligence represents a promising tool for dental implant planning, contributing to greater efficiency, accuracy, and standardization of procedures. However, multicenter studies and further validation are still required to support its large-scale clinical implementation.
