Abstract

Deep vein thromboembolism (DVT) represents a significant cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide, constituting a potentially serious clinical condition due to the possibility of progression to pulmonary embolism and post-thrombotic syndrome. In Primary Health Care (PHC), early recognition of risk factors, identification of suggestive clinical signs, and appropriate referral are fundamental for reducing complications and mortality. The management of DVT in PHC involves risk stratification, rational use of diagnostic tests, timely initiation of anticoagulation when indicated, longitudinal follow-up, and preventive measures. This article addresses the main pathophysiological, diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive aspects of deep vein thromboembolism in the context of primary care.
