Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to analyze the thought of Antonio Gramsci, an Italian thinker, journalist and activist for political freedom. His thinking is based on the theories of Karl Marx, and he tries to update this thinking within the context of Italy. Gramsci's reading helps us to understand the Brazilian reality in terms of social transformation through education. His precise intuitions are added to Paulo Freire's pedagogical practice. The history of men is not a natural fact, but a construction that humanizes in the challenge of being free and constructive of oneself and the world, as a social being. Education and schools play a fundamental role in this process, as they are vectors for new thinking, closely linked to new liberating practices. It is necessary to create a new type of intellectual, one capable of giving voice and making history with those who are not heard.
