PHARMACEUTICAL ASSISTANCE IN THE BRAZILIAN PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM (SUS): CURRENT CHALLENGES AND PERSPECTIVES

Abstract

Pharmaceutical assistance within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) represents a strategic component for ensuring equitable, safe, and rational access to medicines, playing a crucial role in the effectiveness of health actions. This chapter aims to analyze the main challenges and current perspectives of pharmaceutical assistance in the SUS, focusing on management, financing, access, and rational use of medicines. The methodology is based on a qualitative approach, using a narrative review of scientific literature, official documents, and national public health policies, particularly the National Pharmaceutical Assistance Policy and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health. The results indicate significant progress, such as expanded access to essential medicines and the strengthening of primary health care; however, persistent challenges remain, including underfunding, fragmented management, logistical difficulties, and shortages of qualified human resources. Additionally, the findings highlight the need for greater integration across levels of care and increased investment in information technologies and continuing education. It is concluded that strengthening pharmaceutical assistance in the SUS requires sustainable policies, improved management capacity, and recognition of the pharmacist’s role in promoting rational medicine use and better health outcomes.
