Abstract

Hospital-acquired infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria represent a serious public health problem because they compromise patient safety and the effectiveness of treatments. This study is an integrative literature review that aimed to analyze hospital-acquired infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, addressing the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and prevention and control strategies in the hospital environment. The research was conducted in the PubMed, Google Scholar, and SciELO databases, using Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS): “Cross Infection”, “Drug Resistance”, “Hospital Infection Control Program”, and “Antimicrobial Stewardship”. Articles published between 2020 and 2025 were included, without language restriction, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria for study selection. The initial search identified 442 studies, of which 14 were duplicates. After screening titles and abstracts, 393 studies were excluded for not being related to the topic and not meeting the inclusion criteria, leaving 35 articles that were evaluated in full. After applying the criteria, 10 studies were selected for review. The results indicated Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as the main multidrug-resistant microorganisms associated with infections. Hospitals. It was found that adherence to hand hygiene protocols, the rational use of antimicrobials, and the effective action of Hospital Infection Control Committees are fundamental to reducing the spread of these bacteria. It is concluded that the consistent implementation of prevention and control strategies is essential to contain multidrug-resistant microorganisms and ensure greater patient safety.
