Public policies for evaluating basic education in Brazil are an important tool for analyzing and intervening in the quality of the education offered. Assessment, as a pedagogical practice, aims to understand the level of assimilation of content by students and guide teacher planning. In the context of public policies, external assessments stand out, such as the Basic Education Assessment System (SAEB), developed by INEP, which includes instruments such as the National Basic Education Assessment (Aneb), the Prova Brasil and the National Literacy Assessment (ANA). These tools aim to measure student performance on a large scale and identify the factors that influence educational results. Based on the SAEB data, the Basic Education Development Index (IDEB) was created, an indicator that combines school performance with the results of external assessments. The IDEB allows the quality of education to be monitored over time and helps formulate more efficient educational targets and policies. Both instruments have become fundamental in the process of diagnosing, monitoring and improving educational practices, promoting greater transparency and accountability in the management of education networks. They therefore make a significant contribution to improving public education in Brazil.
