Abstract

Violence and abuse against women are significant social determinants of mental illness and are strongly associated with an increased risk of suicide. This chapter aims to analyze the relationship between different forms of violence — physical, psychological, sexual, and institutional — and suicidal ideation, attempts, and behavior among women. The methodology consists of a narrative literature review based on national and international studies published in recognized scientific databases such as SciELO, PubMed, and LILACS, prioritizing works by authors who are references in public health, psychology, and women’s protection policies. The results indicate that women exposed to continuous situations of abuse show a higher prevalence of mental disorders, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety, which are directly related to suicide risk. Additionally, the lack of support networks, institutional revictimization, and gender inequalities further intensify this issue. It is concluded that addressing violence against women requires intersectoral actions, strengthening public policies, training health professionals, and expanding access to humanized care to prevent suicide and promote women’s mental health.
