DIALOGUES: THE CO-CONSTRUCTION OF KNOWLEDGE BETWEEN UNIVERSITY AND FAMILY FARMING IN THE POVO UNIDO COMMUNITY GARDEN, JUAZEIRO/BA

Abstract

This field study, using a qualitative and quantitative approach, analyzed the interaction between university extension programs and community-based family farming at the Povo Unido Community Garden in Juazeiro, Bahia. The research involved field visits conducted between March and May 2025, administering a semi-structured questionnaire and conducting dialogues with 47 farming families. The objective was to understand their perceptions about knowledge exchange and interaction with institutions and education. The results reveal a consensus on the importance of university extension programs; 94% of participants consider university extension programs an exchange of knowledge, and 86% agree that it promotes knowledge exchange. The contributions of the Federal University of the São Francisco Valley (UNIVASF) through a workshop and educational materials were highlighted. However, farmers point to challenges such as limited time for discussion and the effective inclusion of participants with lower levels of education. The conclusion is that dialogic extension programs are essential for the co-construction of knowledge, as they value local knowledge and promote the sustainable development of communities. The study highlights the need for approaches that ensure full engagement of all involved.
