THE ERASED NEWSPAPER: ART, MEMORY, AND CRITICISM IN THE WORK OF LEILA DANZIGER

Abstract

This article investigates the work of visual artist and writer Leila Danziger, with an emphasis on her experiments based on the materiality of printed newspapers. The analysis seeks to understand how, through procedures of erasure, deletion, and rewriting, the artist elaborates a poetic thought that strains the relationships between memory and forgetting. In this process, the research highlights the aesthetic and critical power of the ephemerality of news, its obsolescence and fragility as a medium, articulating these aspects with the notions of repetition, melancholy, and temporality. Thus, Danziger's work is interpreted as a gesture of resistance in the face of contemporary acceleration, establishing a contemplative time that, by rescuing fragments and traces, questions both the social function of the newspaper and the ways in which everyday experience is constructed.
