Oral health in the hospital environment is a relevant component of comprehensive care, especially considering the needs presented by hospitalized patients and those receiving intensive care. This study aimed to analyze the contributions of dental surgeons to the promotion of oral health and comprehensive care for patients in the hospital environment. This is an integrative literature review with a qualitative approach and descriptive and exploratory nature, based on the analysis of scientific studies related to oral health, hospital dentistry, oral hygiene, hospitalized patients, and intensive care. The results showed that hospitalized patients may present specific oral health conditions and needs, with systematic oral hygiene being an important care strategy. The literature analyzed also indicated an association between adequate oral care and certain respiratory outcomes, although findings regarding broader systemic outcomes vary across studies. It is concluded that the work of dental surgeons contributes to the assessment, prevention, and management of oral health conditions, as well as to the integration of dental care within the multidisciplinary team. Therefore, the inclusion of dentistry in the hospital environment strengthens comprehensive and individualized patient care.
