The expansion and modernization of agriculture in the Cerrado region of Piauí have significantly contributed to increased grain production, particularly soybean and corn, highlighting municipalities such as Uruçuí in the regional agricultural landscape. In this context, the use of fertilizers, production technologies, and crop protection products plays an important role in maintaining productivity and controlling organisms capable of causing crop losses. This chapter aimed to discuss the importance of crop protection products in agricultural production systems and to analyze the potential risks to human health and the environment associated with their improper use, considering the context of the Cerrado region of Piauí. The study was conducted through exploratory and descriptive bibliographic and documentary research, based on scientific articles, books, technical documents, and information from official institutions. The literature analysis showed that gains in agricultural productivity result from the integration of genetic improvement, mechanization, soil fertility management, crop protection practices, and technological innovation. However, inadequate practices related to the storage, preparation, and application of crop protection products may increase occupational exposure and contribute to the contamination of soil, water, and non-target organisms. Strategies such as Integrated Pest Management, biological control, crop monitoring, technical assistance, and improved application technologies are important approaches to promoting the rational use of these products. It is concluded that agricultural development in the Cerrado region of Piauí should integrate productivity, technological innovation, worker safety, and environmental conservation, contributing to economically viable and environmentally sustainable agricultural systems.
