Abstract

The planning and sizing of electrical distribution networks in rural properties are fundamental steps to ensure the efficiency, safety, and reliability of energy supply. This chapter presents an applied research, developed thru a case study, conducted at the Rural Campus of the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), with the aim of establishing technical criteria for the assessment of electrical demand, the definition of the transformer and distribution center locations, network layout, and the sizing of conductors and other components of the electrical system. The methodology was based on the inventory of installed loads, the analysis of the simultaneity of equipment operation, the calculation of the maximum demand, the determination of the load center by Cartesian coordinates, and the application of current-carrying capacity and voltage drop criteria, in accordance with the technical standards of the energy utility and applicable regulations. The results allowed for the determination of the maximum demand of the installation, the specification of the transformer and the most suitable conductors for each section of the network, as well as the identification of discrepancies between the obtained sizing and the existing electrical project, highlighting situations of oversizing and undersizing of some circuits. It is concluded that the adoption of technical planning criteria contributes to increasing efficiency, operational safety, and cost rationalization in electrical distribution systems in rural environments.
