HISTORIC QUARRIERS OF HABANA BAY: GEODIVERSITY, BUILT HERITAGE AND GEOTOURISM POTENTIAL

This article analyzes the relationship between historic quarries and the geological-built heritage in Habana Bay, Cuba, with an emphasis on the geotouristic potential of this heritage complex. The investigation is based on the environmental history of the region, which reveals how the extraction of rocks from local quarries, mainly from the Jaimanitas Formation, was fundamental to the construction of the city since the 16th century. The study covers the centuries of occupation, identifying the main quarries that supplied materials for fortifications, churches, palaces and residences, and demonstrates how the fossils extracted together with the rocks today emerge on the walls of ancient buildings, constituting a valuable geocultural heritage. The results show that historic quarries, although many of them are currently buried by the urban structure, are expressions of geodiversity that can and should be used in geotouristic routes, contributing to the appreciation of national identity and the sustainable development of cultural tourism in Havana.
