Abstract

The supplementation of antioxidant compounds in poultry breeder diets has received increasing attention due to its potential to mitigate the effects of oxidative stress and improve the reproductive efficiency of birds. This study consists of a literature review aimed at analyzing the main antioxidants used in poultry breeder nutrition, their mechanisms of action, and their effects on fertility, hatchability, and progeny quality. The methodology was based on the consultation and analysis of scientific articles, books, and technical documents related to oxidative stress, antioxidant systems, and poultry reproduction. The literature indicates that factors such as aging, high metabolic rate and heat stress favor the occurrence of oxidative stress, compromising gamete quality, hatching egg quality, and embryonic development. The findings demonstrate that antioxidants such as vitamin E, selenium, vitamin C, carotenoids and phenolic compounds, act by neutralizing reactive oxygen species, protecting cellular membranes, and enhancing endogenous antioxidant systems. It can be concluded that the use of these compounds represents an important nutritional strategy to preserve the reproductive health of breeder birds, improve fertility and hatchability rates, and promote the production of healthier offspring with greater productive potential.
