Abstract

This chapter analyzes the impact of so-called “weight loss pens” on obesity treatment, emphasizing the challenges related to their indiscriminate use in Brazil. The objective is to discuss the therapeutic efficacy of these drugs, such as GLP-1 analogs, and to critically examine their use without proper medical prescription. The methodology is based on a narrative literature review, including clinical studies, national and international guidelines, and health surveillance data. The results show that these medications are effective in promoting weight loss and improving metabolic control, particularly in patients with obesity and comorbidities. However, there is a growing trend of aesthetic use and self-medication, which is associated with risks such as adverse effects, drug shortages, and inequitable access. It is concluded that, despite representing an important therapeutic advancement, it is essential to strengthen regulation, health education, and clinical monitoring to ensure the safe and equitable use of these technologies in the Brazilian context.
