THE ROLE OF THE SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST: ASSESSMENT AND REHABILITATION IN PATIENTS WITH OROPHARYNGEAL DYSPHAGIA FOLLOWING STROKE

This study investigated the effectiveness of speech-language pathology intervention in the assessment and rehabilitation of oropharyngeal dysphagia in patients affected by stroke. It was a descriptive and qualitative literature review based on 10 scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025. The results demonstrate that the use of validated protocols, such as GUSS, PARD, and EAT-10, is crucial for the early detection of signs of laryngotracheal aspiration and vallecular stasis. The discussion showed that the integrative therapeutic plan, which combines protective and pressure maneuvers (Masako and Mendelsohn) with technological resources such as neuromusculares electrical stimulation and photobiomodulation, accelerates neuroplasticity and the recovery of swallowing biomechanics. It is concluded that early speech-language pathology intervention is essential to reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia and promote safe weaning via alternative feeding methods, directly impacting the reduction of hospitalization time and improving the quality of life of individual's post-stroke.
