Antidepressants are widely prescribed drugs used to treat mental disorders, acting to regulate mood and neurochemical activity. Among the most commonly used antidepressants is venlafaxine hydrochloride, which belongs to the class of serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). After administration, this compound and its metabolites can be eliminated by different anthropogenic pathways in their unmetabolized or biologically active form, reaching wastewater. The limited efficiency of current conventional water and wastewater treatment methods contributes to the persistence of this drug in the environment, classifying it as an emerging contaminant with potential toxicity to aquatic biota and risks to human health. Given this scenario, the chapter discusses and reviews the main treatment techniques applicable to the removal and degradation of venlafaxine in aqueous matrices, with emphasis on adsorption processes, membrane filtration, advanced oxidation processes, and the use of ultraviolet radiation, either alone or in combination with oxidizing agents, highlighting the need for technological advances for more efficient removal of emerging contaminants in water bodies.
