Abstract

The pandemic inserted foreign words into our daily lives. These are what we call foreignisms, or expressions and words from other countries that are incorporated into our language. Real (2020) reports that the term 'COVID 19', an acronym for Coronavirus disease, is an example of this occurrence that has been present in all the news since the beginning of its manifestation, which received the number 19, as it was discovered in December of 2019. This fact can be attributed to the process of globalization, which breaks the borders between countries, inserting words from another language, almost always English, in the area of economics, in the technological area, in education, in the scientific area and since the occurrence of the virus, also in our daily lives. Despite seeming to be something simple, the incorporation of foreign words in our daily lives brings great discussions among linguists and among the population itself, which is divided in relation to their use. We carried out a study with a bibliographic search of 50 texts among news, online and scientific articles that pointed to the most common terms being used in a quantitative- qualitative research with 255 participants, to reveal the understanding of foreign terms and the users' position in relation to their uses, tus contributing to update the studies about the use of foreign terms.
