CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN COMMUNITY-BASED URBAN AGRICULTURE: RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY IN THE POVO UNIDO COMMUNITY GARDEN

Abstract

This qualitative study explored the challenges and opportunities faced by the Povo Unido Community Garden in Juazeiro, Bahia, a 38-year-old Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture (UPA) initiative, consolidated in organic and community-based production. The research, conducted with 47 farming families between March and May 2025, analyzed how self-management and social organization contribute to the group's resilience. The results revealed that low educational levels and advanced age of participants impact production and participation in markets, compounded by logistical and transportation difficulties that encourage on-site sales and dependence on intermediaries. A dual rural/urban identity among farmers was also identified, as well as the urgent need for public policies and greater awareness. The granting of rural retirement benefits emerged as a strong attraction and a pillar of support for the community. It is concluded that, although the garden promotes the subsistence of many families, its full sustainability requires a more effective integration between local knowledge, scientific knowledge and government support, with targeted policies that promote access to sustainable markets and the replication of these experiences.
