RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERIODONTAL DISEASE AND DIABETES MELLITUS: CLINICAL CHARACTERIZATION AND IMPLICATIONS FOR HEALTH CARE

The clinical profile of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), periodontal disease (PD), and the association between both (DM+PD) treated at the Integrated Dentistry Clinics in 2025 was analyzed. This descriptive and documentary study was based on the analysis of 595 clinical records, of which 101 contained information on Db, DP, or Db+DP. The variables included age, sex, comorbidities, medication use, dental treatment planning, and procedures performed. Data were organized in a specific form and analyzed descriptively. A total of 33 patients with Db, 54 with DP, and 14 with Db+DP were identified. A predominance of females was observed in the isolated groups and of males in the associated group, as well as a higher frequency of individuals over 50 years of age. The most prevalent periodontal alterations were calculus, gingival recession, and loss of attachment. There was a high occurrence of comorbidities (anxiety and hypertension) and polypharmacy, mainly involving antidiabetic and antihypertensive drugs. Only 7.9% (n=8) of the records presented a complete integrated treatment plan. The findings confirm the bidirectional relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease, emphasizing the importance of detailed clinical records, interdisciplinary educational actions, and health and organizational health literacy for metabolic and periodontal control, aiming to promote health and improve patients’ quality of life.
