Abstract

In the 21st century, healthcare professionals have shown increasing concern regarding infant nutrition, with particular emphasis on breastfeeding, due to the numerous benefits that natural food offers to the healthy growth and development of newborns. In this context, this review article aims to inform students, teachers, and professionals in Speech-Language Pathology about various aspects related to maternal and infant health, including its history, importance, management techniques, and the disadvantages associated with the use of artificial alternatives in infant feeding. Furthermore, it proposes to discuss the relevance of breastfeeding from a speech-language pathology perspective, emphasizing its contribution to the development of the stomatognathic system, language, and hearing. The article also seeks to explore reflections on the development of competencies aimed at professionals working with mothers, encouraging breastfeeding practices. Finally, it is hoped that this content will contribute not only to expanding the knowledge of Speech-Language Pathology professionals but also those in other health fields.
