EVALUATION OF THE SAFETY AND ADVERSE EFFECTS OF COLLAGEN BIOESTIMULATORS IN AESTHETIC PROCEDURE

Abstract

Collagen biostimulators have emerged as minimally invasive alternatives capable of promoting neocollagenesis and progressively improving skin quality. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and adverse effects associated with the use of these substances in facial and body aesthetic procedures. An integrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, BIREME and Google Scholar, including articles published between 2022 and 2024. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria. The most frequently discussed biostimulators were poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA), polycaprolactone (PCL), polydioxanone threads (PDO) and hyaluronic acid (HA). The findings demonstrated significant improvement in skin firmness, texture and support, with an overall favorable safety profile. The most common adverse effects were mild and self-limiting, including edema, erythema and bruising. Severe complications, such as nodules, granulomas and necrosis, were less frequent and mostly related to inadequate application techniques. It is concluded that biostimulators are safe and effective options when administered by trained professionals, reinforcing their growing role in Aesthetic Biomedicine.
