Lev Semionovich Vygotsky”, published by the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Unesco, is part of the Educators Collection and fulfills a fundamental role by compiling biographical, theoretical, pedagogical and philosophical aspects of one of the greatest exponents of 20th century developmental psychology. Organized by Ivan Ivic, with careful selection and translation of classic texts by Vygotsky himself, the publication is not only a tribute, but an invitation to critical analysis and reflection on the cultural, historical and social foundations of human development, education and the constitution of thought. In this context, this critical review aims to deepen the analysis of the work in its multiple elements: from the unique trajectory of Vygotsky - the “Mozart of Psychology” - to the central concepts of his cultural-historical theory, the impact of his ideas on contemporary psychology and pedagogy, the challenges of operationalization, the limits and criticisms raised and, finally, its relevance to the dilemmas of education in Brazil and the world in the 21st century. The aim is to produce a text that is dense, articulate, interdisciplinary and based on the proposition of questions that go beyond the scope of intellectual history, addressing the epistemological, ethical, political and methodological concerns that Vygotsky's thought raises.
