THE TIMELESS NATURE OF STOIC ETHICS. STOIC ETHICS AND CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

Abstract

Considering that Stoicism is the Hellenistic school of thought that has most influenced Western philosophy, the purpose of this article is to analyze Stoic philosophy, focusing on ethics. It will provide a broad examination of the appropriation of Stoic ethics throughout the centuries up to the present day, seeking to identify its influences as well as the points of divergence and convergence between classical Stoic ethics and Stoic ethics seen through the lens of contemporary society. The focus will be on analyzing Stoic ethics and its main concepts, its appropriation by Roman culture, and its spread across various cultures, mentioning its influence on thinkers such as Kant and Freud, as well as its impact on Catholic doctrine, ultimately determining its perspective within contemporary society. The objective is to characterize whether what is understood as Stoicism (Stoic ethics) in contemporary society corresponds to what was originally conceived and defined by the early Stoics, aiming, above all, to identify the timeless nature of the original concepts of Stoic ethics.
